Connemara100 - 2010 Race Report

The breathtaking mountainous views in Connemara today were dwarfed by the achievement of Athenry man Mick Rice who completed the 100 mile road race in 14 hours and 27 minutes. Starting from Clifden at 6am this morning (Saturday), Mick ran a consistent 8 and a half minute mile speed for the duration of the 100 mile course resulting in a finishing time which is believed to be an Irish best, subject to ratification. Eleven experienced Ultra runners lined up at the start line of the Connemara100. The participants have to complete the course in less than 30 Hours.

Ray O’Connor, the race organiser, also participated in the race and is currently in third position with and expected finish time of under 22 hours. Polish native Maciej Saiwicki is currently in second position but with a race like this anything is still possible. From the 80 mile check point in Roundstone, Ray O’Connor commented, ‘I am so thrilled for Mick, he is such an inspiration - not just to runners like me who enjoy the Ultra distances, but to all the members of the local club Athenry AC and runners throughout the country. This performance confirms Mick’s incredible ability and efforts to improve his performance. For Mick to knock nearly 5 minutes off his Conemara100 time for 2009 is truly incredible.
